Vijf zangers, vier slagwerkers, een actrice, videoanimatie, synthesizer en tape botsen en smelten dan weer samen in Baltasar, een nieuw theatraal muziekproject van Claudio Baroni.

Een groep haveloze strijders is op reis naar een badplaats waar ze een aanslag op een hotel gepland hebben. Het kind dat ze onderweg meegenomen hebben beschouwen ze als hun talisman. Aan het einde van hun reis zijn de strijders klaar om aan te vallen. Maar dan vragen ze zich vertwijfeld af of er eigenlijk wel iemand zal zijn om aan te vallen: de plek lijkt verlaten...

Na de succesvolle multidisciplinaire programma’s Words & Beyond van Seung-Ah Oh met zang, dans en beeldende kunst in 2008 (met diverse hernemingen in de jaren erna) en het dans/slagwerkprogramma Pinball & Grace met Club Guy & Roni en componist Michael Gordon uit 2009/2010, realiseert Slagwerk Den Haag in oktober 2010 opnieuw een multidisciplinaire voorstelling, dit keer in coproductie met VocaalLAB. Het getheatraliseerde muziekstuk Baltasar komt voort uit de samenwerking tussen componist Claudio Baroni, schrijver Reinaldo Laddaga en beeldend kunstenaar Fabián Marcaccio. Ondanks de sterke muzikale, tekstuele en beeldende componenten is opera toch niet het juiste woord voor dit programma.

De videoanimatie volgt de verhaallijn en de wisselingen in de muziek, maar op een discontinue manier. Het beeld krijgt zo zijn eigen dynamiek en zinspeelt op de verhaallijn zonder deze te illustreren, in een ritme dat afwisselt tussen verstilling en hyperactiviteit.

The libretto narrates a trip taken by a group of somewhat rag tag combatants who have planned to attack a hotel in a resort town whose name we do not know. The group is never identified; we don’t know where they come from or what their specific intentions are. They bring with them a child that they’ve found and that has become their talisman. The narrative describes a trip through a region that is poor and, in some ways, archaic. Towards the end of the narrative, they are ready to attack, but doubtful if there is going to be anybody to attack: the place seems to have been deserted...
The text is written mostly in a first person plural that circulates among the voices to compose a secretly multiple we.

Film animation:
The image is a digital animation that incorporates materials of all sorts. It follows the story and the alternatives of the music in a discontinuous way. The image has its own dynamics, and it alludes to the narrative, without fully illustrating it. Its rhythm alternates between stillness and hyperactivity.

Composition:
The music of the piece was written for four percussionists, synthesizer and tape, and five voices that perform a large number of independent modules, whose concrete configuration is decided in each particular performance.

Baltasar will be premiere by two prestigious Dutch ensembles: the percussion quartet Slagwerkgroep Den Haag, and the vocal quintet Vocaal Laboratorium Nederland the 7st of October 2010 in Teatro Argentino, La Plata, Argentina.
