Michael Gordon is a renowned composer of new music and a member of the prestigious American collective, Bang on a Can. This collective is dedicated to developing contemporary music written by its founders: Michael Gordon, David Lang and Julia Wolfe. They have their own ensemble (Bang on a Can All Stars), CD label (Cantaloupe) and festival. Slagwerk Den Haag performed during the Bang on a Can Marathon in New York in 2010. On 16 June, Gordon will be present at the world première of Timber. Where possible, Timer is performed in an unusual setting, with the audience seated around the musicians. This enhances the hypnotic, almost spiritual sound created by the percussionists as they play together.
Timber is a musical composition for six percussionists, which Gordon composed especially for Slagwerk Den Haag. The decision to perform the piece on simantras - percussion instruments resembling wooden beams - was made in consultation with SDH. The piece was used during a 28-gig tour of the Netherlands and Germany, when Slagwerk Den Haag performed together with the dance company Club Guy and Roni in the production Pinball & Grace. This is the first time that the piece will be performed in its entirety.
During the world première on 16 June, in Theater Korzo, The Hague, the CD of Timber was also presented. The deluxe version of the CD comes in a wooden box and will be released on the Cantaloupe label. The cd is available in our webshop.
